Like, Robert Plant said he read the books and he absorbed them into him”, when I was assigned The Hobbit in 8th grade, I decided to read the Trilogy of LoTR & not knowing Robert Plant said that, I felt exactly the same way, as absorbed them Tolkien fans see the lyrics as a reference to his book Return Of The King”, As an Honors English Teacher, it’s not just Return of The King, but the whole Trilogy is represented. Njgop1 from South Jersey ShoreOk, I am huge fan of J.R.R.Pal from Home You may think that Zep may do well to cover Shel on this one.Major Tom from 71913Never get tired of ZEP. ![]() Love the mandolin and it references lord of the rings before the epic movies were made Pearson from Georgia This song is awesome.Warm from Phillylove the woman sandy Duncan signing the words about the hobbit and playing the little guitar, this was always one of my faves, inspired a generation of musicians to play acoustic, unplugged they call it now days, but the zep created it at headley grange, best music studio ever, the mountains gave vision to jimmy pages words.Katzhabit from UsaVery interesting.Angels of Avalon as I understand it are the watchers that are or were kept in darkness for creating the nephalim.specifically for taking wives for themselves from the human race.Just one opinion, but whatever the intent of the writer, this is a stirring song. "The Dark Lord " "Pick up your swords, raise your bow " The Ringwraiths ride in black." I see "With flames from the dragon of darkness, the sunlight blinds his eyes" as a reference to Frodo when he starts to feel the ring he possesses taking hold of him. There are too many references to Lord of the Rings in this song to dismiss the meaning. Avalon is of course Arthur's habitation and kingdom (Camelot/Gondor), and the angel he refers to is the arrival of Aragorn the King on the ships of the Haradrim during the Battle of the Pellenor Fields. The reference to "Angels of Avalon" could well be the connection Plant saw between Lord of the Rings and the Arthurian Legends. If Robert Plant disagrees, I bow to his graces as he wrote the wonderful lyrics to this beautiful song. Bailey from Winthrop, Wa United StatesI'm thinking this song is most likely about Lord of the Rings, not so much Scottish history. ![]()
